Snapshot from MILE 2011: Emerging Leaders in Changing Times

By Will Richter, MLIS – Grand Rapids Area Library

Organized by the Minnesota Library Association, the MILE 2011 retreat was a special opportunity to join other library professionals from around the state to develop and refine leadership skills necessary in the libraries of tomorrow. A cohort of 25 participants met over the course of four days for guided sessions on topics including goal setting, leadership styles, library advocacy, and career development. Guest panelists included MLA president Robin Ewing and library and non-profit movers and shakers from around Minnesota.

For my part, I found the session on StrengthsFinder 2.0 presented by Bethel University Instructor Nikki Daniels especially helpful. It was exciting to learn how individuals various strengths interact – and how an understanding of this interaction can lead to positive collaborations and a healthy work environment. Another important aspect of the MILE experience is the opportunity to make connections with people from the broader library community. With only one other Arrowhead librarian (Susan Schumacher – Duluth) in the 25 member cohort I had the opportunity to meet many new people. I look forward to working with them as we plan the next MILE institute.

I highly recommend MILE as the best professional development opportunity I have participated in. The sessions were interesting and meaningful to my work as a reference librarian in the public library setting. Also, I look forward to the opportunity to work with a mentor whom I have been paired with by MILE 2011 staff. I am excited about the potential of this ongoing aspect of the Institute and hope my professional growth continues beyond the time constraints of the retreat.

A special thank you to the North Country Library Cooperative Board for sponsoring my participation at the Minnesota Library Association Institute for Leadership Excellence (MILE 2011).

MOOC, Anyone?

I received the following message in my Facebook messages and thought perhaps that it might be of interest to others in the library community:

The Center for Online Learning, Research and Service at the University of Illinois Springfield welcomes you to a Massive Open Online Class (MOOC) on “Online Learning Today...and Tomorrow.” It will begin June 27, 2011 and run for eight weeks. It is totally open, free, and collaborative. It can be totally asynchronous, or those attending can join in weekly panel discussions with experts in various aspects of the topic. This is an active and growing resource and networking center on the topic of "Online Learning Today, and Tomorrow." You will have the opportunity to meet many people around the world who share your interest in this topic.

You are invited to register at https://sites.google.com/site/edumooc/home with only your name and email address so you can be given access to all materials, panels and discussions. You can begin building your own personal learning network on the topic. We will use this information to register you in a Google Group (edumooc) which will allow you to enter into discussions and - if you so designate - to receive a listserv of postings. We will not use this information for advertising or promotion of any kind.

What is a MOOC? Watch this video by Dave Cormier.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eW3gMGqcZQc&feature=youtu.be

Now that we have a common understanding, here is
How the eduMOOC is Organized
Eight topics have been chosen - one for each week. You will see the schedule for those topics below. A Web page is linked below and in the left navigation column for each topic - those pages include details about the topic for each week, including links to about 20 timely resources including articles, Websites, Twitter hashtags, blogs, wikis and more that are relevant to the topic of the week. On Thursday of each of the weeks a live one hour Webinar panel discussion will be held with experts on the topic of the week. The session URL will be available to all who register, and Webinar panel sessions will be open to the first one hundred participants who may ask questions; the session will be recorded and be made available online for those who wish to view later.

Google Group
Those registering for the course - see the short form in the right column above - will be enrolled in Google Group "Edumooc" where threaded discussions will be held. This is where networking will begin among those attending the MOOC. If you choose, you will be able to receive updates via email through the group settings.

Twitter
We will use the #edumooc hashtag for tweets regarding the MOOC. You will see those displayed in the gadget on this page. We encourage tweeting and Twitter discussions.

Contribute Resources to This Site
You are encouraged to browse those sites and to add sites in Diigo. We will transfer the new Diigo sites to the appropriate list on a daily basis. Please use the "edumooc" tag if you would like your selected sites to be transferred to the topic Webpage.

Minitex & MnLink Announcement

Bill de John, Minitex Director, has released the following statement regarding Minitex and MnLink with relation to the potential state government shutdown on July 1, 2011.

"The University of Minnesota has announced that it would be able to sustain operations for a period of time that is yet to be determined if a state government shutdown begins on July 1, 2011. Minitex is part of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Libraries and will also sustain operations depending upon the length of the shutdown. We also anticipate that the MnLINK Gateway will continue to be operational. We will continue to provide services and maintain staff during this period, and we are very hopeful that any shutdown will be brief.

However, there may be service interruptions during this period that we can’t predict at this time. We will monitor this situation on a daily and weekly basis. We will try to keep the Minitex Delivery System operational since it delivers needed resources to people and links with many local libraries in the three-state region. We will also plan on continuing to fill requests from the University Libraries and refer requests to other libraries as appropriate. If you have any questions, please let me know. We will continue to communicate with Minitex participating library staff through these communication channels and other means as appropriate during the coming weeks."

A New Digital Literacy Resource

In partnership with nine federal agencies, the Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), created www.DigitalLiteracy.gov to provide librarians, teachers, workforce trainers, and others a central location to share digital literacy content and best practices. These trusted groups can, in turn, better reach out to their communities in providing them the skills today’s employers need. NTIA is also partnering with the American Library Association and the Institute of Museum and Library Services to promote the use of the portal by the nation’s more than 16,600 public libraries where, in 2009, over 30 million job-seekers used computers to search and apply for jobs. In launching www.DigitalLiteracy.gov, NTIA is building on knowledge gained from managing its broadband grants program in order to provide digital literacy resources to all Americans.

ALA's Executive Director Emily Sheketoff writes: "This new portal is an important first step in collecting and sharing class materials, research, and online learning tools. We look forward to greatly expanding the content available as librarians, educators and other practitioners engage with the website."
